Avalon Ball Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
HOW DO I BOOK MY FERRY TICKETS?
Ferry tickets are available through Catalina Express.
Please contact them at 1-800-481-3470 or book online at http://www.catalinaexpress.com/. If you are returning on the Saturday special Avalon Ball 11:00 p.m. ferry, please make sure you book your tickets from the Long Beach Downtown Landing. You then select the 11 PM "Avalon Ball" return boat on their website.
In the past, parking has been $17 per 24 hours at the Long Beach Downtown Landing Parking lot. Please be aware that ¬†parking fees are not under the ADSLA’s control so plan accordingly.
SOMETHING CAME UP, MAY I HAVE A REFUND?
These tickets are transferable, so if you find someone who will buy your ticket, you can easily change the name on the ticket. Since this is a fundraiser, we hope you will consider the ticket(s) as a donation to help with ADSLA’s preservation goals. Please note that ADSLA does not refund tickets, but you can opt for a refund through Brown Paper Tickets.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? DO I HAVE TO WEAR VINTAGE?
Vintage or vintage-inspired clothing is encouraged and admired, but certainly not required.
For women we recommend cocktail or full-length dresses.
For men we recommend white tie and tails, tuxedo, white dinner jacket or suit.
WHERE AND HOW DO I CHECK IN FOR THE BALL?
This year, Brown Paper Tickets will mail your ticket(s) to you. Please be sure to remember to bring this with you to the ball. Once doors open at 5:45 p.m. for members and 6:00 p.m. for nonmembers, you just need to show your physical ticket(s) to get in.
Should you lose or forget to bring your physical ticket(s), please check in at the ADSLA check-in table at the Casino entry and they can look you up on our master ticket list.
At 5:00 p.m., our volunteer staff will be outside the Casino Ballroom to address any questions or issues. If you have reserved a table, please check in at the ADSLA check-in table at the Casino entry to get your table assignment.
There will be a designated ADSLA Member line and a Non-Member line. ADSLA Members will be let in first, at 5:45 p.m., along with reserved table guests. The rest of the attendees will be let in starting at 6:00 pm.
MAY I RESERVE A TABLE?
We highly recommend that you purchase a RESERVED TABLE to be guaranteed a seat for you and 3 of your guests. We offer RESERVED TABLES as an additional purchase on top of your ticket purchase. This is an a la carte option for $300 (table for 4) in the ticket menu option at Brown Paper Tickets for this event.
At check in, please bring your RESERVED TABLE ticket to the ADSLA check-in table at the Casino entry, and our staff will let you know your table assignment.
All other table seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There is not enough seating for all attendees, so we encourage guests to share tables and socialize.
Please note that ADSLA members are admitted 15 minutes earlier than non-members, so they will get the first opportunity to secure a table. Should you wish to be in the ADSLA Member line, you do have the opportunity to become a member at the check-in time starting at 5:00 pm.
IS THERE SOMEWHERE ON THE ISLAND WHERE I CAN CHANGE MY CLOTHES?
On the second floor of the Casino, there is a large ladies’ lounge and a small men’s lounge. Please note no one will be allowed into the building until 5:45/6:00 p.m. There are a limited number of electric plugs for curling irons, hair dryers, etc.. If you want to change earlier, you may use a public restroom on the island or arrange with a friend who has a hotel room where you can change.
WHERE CAN I PUT MY STUFF WHILE DANCING?
There is a complimentary coat check on the second floor of the Casino. You will see it on your way up to the ballroom and it is conveniently located just outside of the ladies lounge. We encourage you to check all of your bags, coats, and hats (except small purses and cameras).
A Casino staff member will be stationed at the coat check during the event should you need to access your personal belongings during the dance.
DO YOU SERVE FOOD?
The bar in the ballroom sometimes offers a variety of light fare, but does not provide dinner. We recommend that you budget some time to patronize and dine at one of the many restaurants in Avalon before the ball. They range from fast food stands to elegant sit-down restaurants.
For restaurant info, go to http://web.catalinachamber.com/Dining/Restaurants
This year there will be an extra perk to those with reserved tables. You may order at the bar, and your order will be delivered to your table!
ARE DRINKS AVAILABLE?
Yes, there is a full bar that accepts cash and Visa/MC. Due to the drought on the island, bottled water is available for purchase.
WHAT IS THE DANCE FLOOR LIKE?
The dance floor may be either very slippery or very sticky, depending on the temperature and other variables. We recommend that you bring some dance shoe options that will work on either type of surface.
WILL YOU BE OBSERVING LINE OF DANCE?
A resounding “yes”! We request that swing and other dancers who are doing spot dances gravitate towards the middle of the dance floor so that those doing traveling dances may move freely in a counter-clockwise direction around the dance floor.
WHAT DANCES WILL BE DANCED?
The program will include a mix of Foxtrots, Swing, Balboa, Charleston, Rumba, Waltz and Tango. Whether you are a pro-dancer or dancing for the first time, just have fun and watch out for other dancers on the dance floor.
DO I HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO DANCE TO ATTEND?
No, many non-dancers attend to enjoy the atmosphere and socialize. We do ask those who are not dancing to stay off the dance floor.for safety reasons. During band breaks, we will be offering some complimentary introductory dance lessons, so you can learn a few steps and try it!
MAY I BRING MY CAMERA AND TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS?
Cameras are allowed and encouraged. We hope you share your photos with us!
DO I NEED TO BRING A PARTNER?
No, you don't need to bring a partner or a date, and many people come stag. As usual with such events, there tend to be a few more women than men, so ladies would be well advised not to wait to be asked, but to feel free to ask gentlemen to dance.
I WANT TO SPEND THE DAY AT CATALINA. IS THERE SOMEWHERE I CAN PUT MY EVENING WEAR WHILE I EXPLORE THE ISLAND?
Yes, there is a luggage check at the Catalina Express terminal. The cost varies from $3 to $8 a bag.
I AM STAYING FOR THE WEEKEND AT CATALINA, ARE THERE OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT ADSLA WILL BE PLANNING?
