ImagePlease join the ADSLA for Cocktails in Historic Places® on Friday, July 21st from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at El Cid in Silver Lake.

July’s meet-up site has a long and colorful history. Over a century ago, the lot that El Cid now stands on was part of the Reliance-Majestic motion picture studio, where pioneering director D.W. Griffith filmed scenes from his controversial epic, The Birth of a Nation.

In 1925, the site became home to the Jail Café—one of several prison-themed restaurants in Los Angeles at that time. Entry was via a stone facade along Sunset Boulevard made to look like prison walls complete with a watchtower and barred windows featuring paintings of convicts peering out. Customers sat at tables inside barred cells and were served by waiters wearing striped prison garb. Adding to the prison experience, no utensils were provided—diners had to eat their steak, chicken, or lobster with their bare hands.
After a few years, the novelty of dining like a convicted criminal wore off, and the venue was turned into a cabaret theater. In 1962, dancers Juan Talavera and Margarita Cordova along with Cordova’s husband Clark Allen gave the space an Old Spanish makeover and relaunched it as the flamenco dinner theater club El Cid.

Over fifty years later, El Cid is still one of the city’s premier flamenco dance venues, but these days it hosts a wide variety of other events as well, including comedy shows, DJ nights, local rock bands, and movie screenings. The restaurant serves a Spanish-style menu with items ranging from tapas to full dinner (and happily, utensils are included). Happy hour specials are offered between 5 and 8 p.m., and valet parking is available with a $10 service charge.

Come straight from work, or slip into something more Deco—either way, come join us on the picturesque patio of El Cid, which is located at 4212 W. Sunset Blvd, 90029 (323-668-0318).

Cocktails in Historic Places® is open to members and non-members alike and reservations are not required, but an RSVP on the Facebook page helps us get a head count (and generates an event reminder).
